SUMMARY:Human Rights Colloquium: Lawyering under Authoritarianism: The
  Iranian Experience
UID:fc32-e64a-fbd5-11362@www.humanrights.fau.de
DESCRIPTION:This FAU CHREN Human Rights Colloquium will be held on 1
2 November 2025 from 6 to 7:30 pm and will feature Dr. Afrooz Maghzi a
s speaker and Prof. Dr. Eva Pils as chair. Description This presentati
on examines the evolution of cause lawyering in Iran as a case study o
f legal advocacy under authoritarian rule. Iranian lawyers have long d
efended political dissidents\, advanced rights\, and contested repress
ion\, yet their work unfolds within a legal order designed to both ena
ble and constrain activism. Drawing on socio-legal debates on authorit
arian legality\, the talk highlights the paradoxical opportunities tha
t make legal advocacy possible\, while also tracing the state’s stra
tegies of suppression—from judicial control and parallel courts to h
arassment\, disbarment\, and exile. By situating Iran within broader a
uthoritarian contexts\, the analysis shows how lawyers navigate betwee
n repression and possibility\, and how their engagement has influenced
social and political movements in contemporary Iran. The Iranian expe
rience also offers insights into the dilemmas and strategies of lawyer
ing under conditions of rising authoritarianism worldwide. Speaker Bio
Dr. Afrooz Maghzi is an Iranian lawyer\, socio-legal scholar\, and hu
man rights activist. She holds a PhD in Law from Martin Luther Univers
